1407 AD
Crnomelj and Metlika received municipal rights, including the right to have their
annual markets and city walls.
1408 AD
Begining of Ottoman incursions which lasted until 1579 when fortress in Karlovac was finished.
1421 AD
In written sources the settlement Stari trg is mentioned for the first time.
1430 AD
Zumberak inhabited by renegades escaped from the Ottoman occupation.
1496 AD
Orphanage in Metlika was founded.
1529 - 1579 AD
Crnomelj is a defensive centre against Ottomans. The presence of military was
related to the well-being of the town. After military move in Karlovac in 1579 the town
started to regress.
1557 AD
A general of a newly founded Krajina region, Ivan Lenkovic, built a strong
fortification on the bank of the Kolpa river at Pobrezje, at a Ottoman frequent river
crossing site. He brought renegade settlers from Lika. Their descendants still live in the
nearby villages Bojanci, Marindol and Milici.
1588 AD
Metlika became an important posting stage for the mail carriage between Ljubljana
and Karlovac.
16th century AD
In this restless century Protestantism spread across the region. Protestant schools
took place in Metlika and Crnomelj.
