Wines from Bela Krajina

Today our tradition of quality wine-making is celebrated at our annual Vigred wine festival which occurs every May in Metlika and on St. Martin's Day in Crnomelj and Semic.

Bela Krajina has two wine cellars. In the wine cellar of Metlika is archived Metliska crnina, the most famous wine of this area. 

In the wine cellar in Crnomelj you can taste and enjoy the best wines of Bela krajina, as well as learn a little about them. Here you  arrange tours to wineries, guided by local hosts who are knowledgeable and experienced wine experts.

 Bela Krajina has long tradition of winegrowing. Vineyards were important source of livelihood for centuries. However, at the end of the nineteenth century disaster struck. Phylloxera, the root louse which had devastated European vineyards. This disaster was one of the main reason for a huge emigration of people to America and other countries.

But those who stayed started again and new vines were planted. Gradually, the wines of the region began to gain an international reputation.
