John Medved

My grandfather John Medved was born in Mocile in 1862. We believe he emigrated to America via Switzerland about 1877-79. His family lived in Mocile?. We have a registry form that lists his parents and 7 siblings living in and around Crnomelj?.His mothers maiden name was Panian, Marjia. We will be visiting Slovenia in mid April and plan to visit Crnomelj . We would be looking for the name of the churches there and would like to know if there are any other places we should look for information, Our Uncle got the copies of the Auskunfte which lists the names of the children. I believe he got it from the Official registry in Ljubljana. It has been several years ago and I don't know if it would be worthwhile to write again . I would appreciate any help I can get before our trip there. Thank you Betty Mc Donald

Slanc, Skoff and Dragovan families

My grandfather Anton SLANC, son of John SLANC and Mary SKOF (skoff) came from the Metlika area. He immigrated to the United States in 1899 settling in Leadville, Colorado. His future wife, Mary DRAGOVAN, arrived in the United States August 1904. They married September 1904 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Leadville, Colorado. About 1911 the family moved to Neelyville, Missouri. On Anton Slanc's funeral record his date of birth was listed as March 4, 1880 but when he registered for the draft for World War One he gave his date of birth as April 6th, 1880.On Mary DRAGOVAN's funeral record her date of birth is given as July 26, 1879. On the marriage record only the name of her father was given -- John. Grabrenc was her last place of residence before sailing on board the LaGascogne from LeHave France to Ellis Island New York. Anton had a sister, Teresa, married to a Muc and to a Tomc. Mary had a sister Katherine married to a Peter Jursinic and lived in Joliet, Illinois. Mary also had a brother I believe was named George. I have been in email contact with 2 individuals in Slovenia. Both have helped me but I have nothing more concrete then that written above. One graciously translated letters written to my grandfather during the late 1940's. I would be very grateful for any help regarding the Slanc, Skoff and Dragovan families. Dorothy Franko Campbell

Hello to anyone in Crnomelj,

My grandfather emmigrated to the US from Crnomelj, Slovenia over 100 years ago. I would like to correspond with someone in the Village of Crnomelj to find out if there are any Werscaj family there today. I'd also like any information about Crnomelj. How large is it? Is there a way to search out my ancestors if I visited there? Are there hotels or places of lodging available there? Is there transportation available from Ljubljana to Crnomelj? If anyone can help me, please respond. Thanks, Bob Werschay

This message is a reply to Shirlee Crow

I sent several email reply messages to the above email address about a month ago, but got no reply. I also phoned every "Crow" listed in the S.F. phone book, but couldnt find Shirlee Crow or anyone who knows her. So I decided to post a reply message on your Web site in hopes that she will see it and contact me. I am a "cousin" of yours, Shirlee. My great grandmother was Josephine ("Pepa") Malic. She was the youngest sister of your great grandmother, Adika (Malic) Fabian. You and I have the same great grandparents, Franc Malic and Barbara (Mihelic) Malic. The latter two individuals were also the grandparents of the well known Slovene poet, Oton Zupancic. Both of us are also distantly related to Ed Mihelic who also posted a message on this Web site. His great aunt was Barbara (Mihelic) Malic. I contacted Ed recently, and he was kind enough to send me some family chart information. I have subsequently obtained even more family information from my aunt, Helen who lives in Arizona. She told me that she and her mother (my grandmother) visited Adika Fabian back in the 1940s. This was when Adika was living in Oakland, California. They also visited one of Adikas daughters who was then living in a house in San Francisco. Helen doesnt remember the name of this daughter, but perhaps it was your mother, Shirlee? Weve also come to learn that Adika had at least one daughter named "Rose Lomholdt". This person must be either your mother or your aunt? Please contact me via email because I have much more family information to share with you, including electronic pictures. I am also trying to get in touch with the son of Oton Zupancic, Dr. Andrej Zupancic who is a neuropathologist living in Ljubljana. I sent him an email via Ed Mihelic some time ago, but received no reply. If anyone has a snail mail address or email address for him, please let me know so that I may contact him directly. His father, Oton was a first cousin of my grandmother and they spent considerable time together when she was growing up in Slovenia. My grandmother spent every summer of her youth at the farm of her grandparents, Franc and Barbara Malic. Her fondest childhood memories are from the summers spent on this farm. Hope to hear from you soon, Shirlee! Karin Zalec Redwood City, CA

Hello

My family immigrated from the villages of Predgrad, Ceplje and Stari Trg to the United States in the 1890s. I have recently started a hobby in story telling and am interested in finding a source for Slovenian folk tales, legends, myths or other stories from this area. I would appreciate any English language sources if possible. Thanks, John Majerle
