| My grandfather, Gabre Popovic, was baptized in the Greek Catholic parish of Drage on 24 April 1890. He was the son of Marko Popovic and Mare Petkovic, who lived at Popovici #2. He came to the U.S. with his older brother Petar in 1909 and settled in Indiana Harbor, Indiana.
According to the passenger manifest, Petar had a wife Julika back home in Popovici. Since there is no other record of Petar in the U.S., we assume he returned to Popovici.
Another brother, Marko, died of the Spanish influenza in Indiana in 1918.
A sister (or more likely half-sister) Jela came to the U.S. in 1921.
Since the records available on microfilm only cover 1889-1900 and are only for baptisms, there are a lot of questions outstanding for my family.
I have transcribed the baptismal register of Drage parish for the years 1889 to 1900. The most common surnames include Popovic, Smiljanic, Predovic, Badovinac, Damjanovic, Selakovic, Reba and Bjelopavlovic. Villages within the parish included Drage, Popovici, Skemljevac, Hrast, Malinje, Dol, Jugorje.
The parish register notes a few marriages and deaths in the U.S., including some from Colorado and at least one from Cleveland.
I would be happy to share information with anyone whose ancestors came from this parish, and would love to hear from anyone in the Old Country who may be related.
Can someone translate "Mjesto stanovanja kucni broj i zupa roditelja"? I am unclear about house/household/farm numbers - old and new. Are these new houses that were built, or new households? Was everyone living at the same number related? Or were households that included unrelated workers on a farm?
